Early period shields for living history, reenactment, and SCA fencing/cut and thrust. These shields are made to closely resemble early period shields down to construction methods and materials with a few modern touches for longevity in our sport. Made of quarter inch birch plywood, I face my shields on both sides with both canvas (your choice of cotton or linen) and alum tanned leather, and then trim them in sewn or tacked rawhide. I carve long spar-style handles to your specifications and hand rivet these through metal bosses made by Therion Arms, which can be satin or polished steel, gun blued, or hot-brassed and sealed with renaissance wax, or painted any color of your choice. I then paint both faces with a flat coat of latex house paint and clear coat for sun damage longevity vs historic egg tempura and add the design of your choice to the front face. This can be anything from historic simple geometric and spiral designs to early period interpretations of your registered SCA coat of arms. I have a large graphic lexicon of Pictish, Ringerike, Urnes, Manmen, Norman, Saxon and Frankish artwork to ground my intrepretations of heraldic art in a pre-heraldic context using real historic designs from standing stones throughout the Iron, Migration and Viking Ages of Northwestern Europe.
These shields are designed to take a beating, but I would not recommend them for SCA heavy combat or bohurt. I am more than willing to make these same shields from three eights and half inch marine grade plywood for those sports, but for SCA heavy specifically I very much recommend turning to other sellers like GreyCat who offer aluminum shields as they hold up much better in a sport context.
