Intellectual Property (IP) & Copyright Guidelines
Protecting your work — and respecting others.
At Drifa’s Leap, our mission is to support original handmade art and protect creators. That means defending your rights and respecting the intellectual property of others. Below you’ll find answers and guidelines for makers about copyright, trademarks, and fair use.
⚖ Important Disclaimer
The following information is provided for general educational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. Intellectual property laws can vary depending on your location and circumstances. For advice regarding your specific situation, please consult an attorney experienced in intellectual property law.
❓ Can I make and sell items inspired by movies, shows, or games?
You can create original work inspired by a genre or aesthetic, but you cannot use names, logos, characters, or titles protected by copyright or trademark.
Examples:
✅ “Space fantasy lightsword prop” or “galactic-inspired robe”
? “Star Wars lightsaber” or “Jedi robe”
Use descriptive language that helps shoppers picture what it looks like — not what brand it imitates.
❓ What about using licensed character fabric?
Many craft stores sell fabric featuring popular characters, but those materials are typically licensed for personal use only, not for resale.
You may use them to make handmade goods, but listings cannot use brand or character names. Instead, describe the fabric or design in a general way.
Examples:
✅ “Handmade pillowcase made from licensed character fabric”
✅ “Elephant-themed pillowcase made with officially licensed material”
? “Dumbo pillowcase” or “Disney Dumbo fabric pillowcase”
To avoid confusion and protect your shop, do not use the company’s name (even in disclaimers). Instead, refer to the material as licensed fabric or character print fabric.
❓ Can I sell fan art or fan-made props?
Only if the work is entirely original and does not copy or name protected characters, logos, or symbols.
Describe it using broad, thematic language such as:
• Fantasy & Fan-Inspired
• Galactic & Sci-Fi Themes
• Heroes & Legends
If the item directly replicates or names a character, movie, or brand, it cannot be listed.
❓ What if I see something that looks like an IP violation?
Thank you — that’s how most issues are caught!
Please email support@drifasleap.com with a link to the listing and a brief description.
A “Report Listing” button will be added soon to make this process even easier.
❓ What happens when someone reports a listing?
Every report is reviewed by a real person. If there’s a clear violation, the listing is removed and the seller is contacted to correct it.
Repeated or deliberate violations may lead to suspension or permanent account removal.
❓ How does Drifa’s Leap protect my original work?
If you believe another seller has copied your work, email support@drifasleap.com with:
• A link to the infringing listing
• Proof that the work is your original creation
We review every claim carefully and remove infringing items when confirmed.
❓ Can I say “not affiliated with” or “inspired by” a brand name?
No. Even with disclaimers, using a trademarked name in your listing can trigger automated brand takedowns.
Instead, describe the look or style without naming the source.
Examples:
✅ “Retro space adventure print”
? “Inspired by Star Wars” or “Not affiliated with Disney”
❓ What about “Fair Use”?
“Fair use” is a narrow legal exception that generally allows limited commentary, criticism, or parody — not the commercial sale of items referencing copyrighted or trademarked works.
If you’re selling something, it’s safest to avoid all protected brand names, characters, and logos.
? Quick Rule of Thumb
If your description helps shoppers picture what it looks like, it’s usually fine.
If it helps them picture where it’s from, it probably isn’t.
