Inspired by the woven-frill textiles excavated from the royal burials of Burgos Cathedral in Spain, this linen veil is my own interpretation of these extraordinary medieval head coverings. While the surviving originals were woven in fine silk, I wanted to explore the same elegant aesthetic in crisp, breathable linen, creating a piece that is beautiful, practical, and well suited to historical reenactment.

The delicate frilled edges are woven directly into the fabric rather than sewn on afterward, echoing the remarkable construction techniques found in the medieval originals. The lightweight linen drapes beautifully while providing the structure and texture that make frilled veils such an iconic part of 13th- and 14th-century European dress.

Whether worn over a barbette, pinned as a simple head covering, or incorporated into a more elaborate medieval headdress, this veil is equally at home at SCA events, living history demonstrations, medieval fairs, or historical costume collections.
